Delivery of new diesel engines controllers to MV Polar Queen

Data Process Automasjon AS has upgraded the motor controllers onboard MV Polar Queen for Rieber Shipping.

The system handles safety functions, start/stop, control functions and alarm handling for 4 MAN engines that drive generator sets. The previous system was an old PLC system based on ABB controllers.

For this project we chose to use the InteliDrive DCU (Diesel Control Unit). This is a DNV approved Unit. One DCU is used for each engine. The DCU is a motor controller with integrated I/Os that can be extended by additional external I/O modules. The DCU is a flexible, easy to use, and affordable option for applications such as this.

The request from Rieber Shipping was to complete the upgrade during a yard stay in Denmark.

After a relatively short project phase in Bergen, the installation of the equipment started in Denmark. The yard stay was pushed forward by three weeks, and though this meant that the testing of the software had to be completed on board in parallel with the disassembly of the old equipment, the assembly of the new equipment and the rebuilding of the control cabinets, we decided to go ahead with the project after a review in consultation with the Superintendent.

A total of approximately 20 days were used for the installation and testing of the new system. Polar Queen then headed to Brazil where it had its next mission for Petrobas.

The feedback on the equipment and the installation has been good. At the time being we are doing a course in Bergen on the use of, and fault finding, on the system for the electricians.
